"Beat the Beast" postcards
I got this from the FamNet weblog. We can still add our Cadet's names to this list. email Laura Conners at lconnors@maine.rr.com
There is a yearly tradition of sending postcards to our basic cadets that say "You Beat the Beast," to congratulate them on their major accomplishment of completing Basic Training, including Jack's Valley.

Last year, the Keidels did an awesome job of organizing the class of '08 parents, who sent postcards to 268 basic cadets as they completed BCT! The postcards were wonderful -- from all over the country and abroad.
In the spirit of supporting our kids (and maybe in the spirit of a little competition as well), we'd like to exceed last year's number of cadets. We want to get as many basic cadets on this list as possible. Here's what you do:
ADD YOUR CADET TO THE LIST -- Send me your cadet's information, and include their:
Cadet Name
USAFA PO Box
BCT summer squadron (and flight if known)
Academic cadet squadron (to which they will transfer following BCT)
Home town and state
Parents name
Format in which you'd like to receive the list (more about that below)
You can also send information for cadets whose families are not on FAMNET. The goal is to get as many basic cadets listed as possible.
SEND POSTCARDS FROM YOUR AREA TO AS MANY OF THE CADETS ON THIS LIST AS YOU'D LIKE -- Yes they can be cheesy, silly, campy, goofy, gaudy, and obscure. Each postcard is a piece of Americana. And it's great if you want to make your own! You can find clip art and print up postcards on cardstock. (Avery makes a product of 4 postcards per sheet -- perforated to make it easy to separate them.)
ADD YOUR CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE TO THE POSTCARD -- Some ideas: "Congrats!!! You Beat the Beast" or "You survived the Beast". If you want to sign your name on the card, that's entirely up to you. Last year some signed them, others sent them anonymously.
SEND AS MANY POSTCARDS AS YOU WANT -- Last year by the first of August, the '08 parents had 260 names to send postcards to. Parents chose different ways to send them. Some felt they could send postcards to every cadet on the list. Others sent them to the new basic cadets that would be in their cadet's academic squad. Some people sent them to basic cadets that lived in their state. Some sent to basic cadets that went to Prep school with their cadet. Send them to as many basic cadets that you feel comfortable with. Postage costs less for postcards - only $.23 each.
INVOLVE YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY AS WELL -- Anyone can send "You Beat the Beast" postcards. The more, the merrier!!!!!
SEND THE POSTCARDS THE LAST WEEK OF JACK'S VALLEY (week of August 1) -- We don't want to send them too early. They should not be received until after they return from Jack's Valley on Aug 6. Allow several days for mail.
LET ME KNOW WHAT FORMAT YOU WANT THE LIST IN -- I can provide the list in three different ways: as an MS Excel spreadsheet, in MS Word as a simple list and in MS Word formatted for Avery mailing labels (stock # nnnn). Just let me know which format you want when you send me your cadet's information.
THE FINAL LIST WILL BE SENT TO YOU NO LATER THAN JULY 30 -- I'll start sending partial lists before then, so there isn't a huge deluge at the end; I'll continue to send out names as I get them trhough July 30.
REMEMBER - WE WANT THIS TO BE A SURPRISE, SO DON'T MENTION THIS TO YOUR BASICS!!
Let me know if you have any questions.
